I took out some new activities for our class for the month of October, this is a big hit. I have 4 of the Styrofoam pumpkins from Michael's and poked holes in them, then pulled out the Mr. Potato Head parts. The kids have had a great time creating crazy Pumpkin Heads.

Friday Funday at the Fire Station

Well, today was no different from any other Friday afternoon at school, some Fridays we have assemblies here at school, some are movie and popcorn days, some are fun and game days and other Fridays we get to go out to visit our community. Today the kids who stay all day got to go to the Fire Station and visit, this was a great way to start off Fire Safety week. The fire men were so great they let us play on the fire pole, we lifted weights in their weight room, we visited their bedrooms and their kitchen. The Fire engines were the most fun, we got to see all the cool equipment and feel how the oxygen comes out of the air tanks. The tires on the engines were bigger than our kids. Thank you Fire Station #3.

1 cup sliced almonds
6 TBS sugar

~ Candy almonds :
combine in a medimum saute pan. Cook, stirring constantly over a medimum flame. As soon a s sugar is melted place almonds on a piece of foil to cool.

2-3 bags of spring mix
2 cups of celery, chopped
8 green onions, chopped
2 11 oz cans of mandarin oranges, drained
2-3 avocados, diced
2 granny smith apples, diced
1/2 cup currants
2 pkgs feta cheese or blue cheese, crumbled
6 chicken breast halves, cooked and diced (I grilled mine but you can boil)

Combine all ingredients and toss with dressing.

Dressing:
1 cup oil
1/2 tea sesame oil
1/4 cup sugar
1 tea dry mustard
2 tea ground peper
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar

Rainy Day Fun!

Today we managed to get outside in between rain fall. We managed to get out and run laps this morning. We are in training for a kids race in the spring.

We also got to get outside for recess. The kids were so excited to build a damn to keep the water from running onto the basketball court.

The boys helped me serve hot lunch to the middle schoolers. They loved it, each one had a specific job and they got to eat a piece of pizza after helping.

After serving lunch the boys took some boxes and made them into cars, which turned into a hiding box which then got to get smashed. We had a really fun rainy day.

A Ride on the Polar Express

Today we had a Polar Express/ craft afternoon. The kids came in and we had the table set with hot cocoa, a mini candy cane to stir, marshmallows and donuts. Then we made these cute candy cane reindeer. It was a fun time.

Colin found the silver reindeer bell hidden under his chair and received the first bell of the party. We also made candy canes out of beads and pipe cleaners.

Yesterday I had the privilege of delivering gifts directly to one of the families that our school adopted. It was so special to see first hand how truly appreciative these kids were for what we gave them.

The older girls wrote thank you letters to our families and I wanted to quote a bit for you "...You made me realize that there are still good, caring, loving people in the world and when I grow up I want to do the same things you are doing for us and to other needy people. You are an inspiration to my life. . . Thank you for bringing a smile to my face and all of my families face. . .I didn't know other people could bring joy to others life God bless you a million times. " I just want to share the appreciation with all of you. Thank you to those families that donated items.

I am always amazed at how artistic my class is, we made these cute snowmen and they did a great job. We drew them with white crayon then traced the white crayon with glue, let it dry over night then colored them in with pastels.

Today was the fall festival and we had a great time. This morning we started out with the parade around school, then we came into our class and had a snack then we played musical chairs and Halloween twister. Happy Diwali

Ketan's mom came in today and share with us the celebration of Diwali ~ The Festival of Lights we learned that it is a celebration in India and they get to eat a lot of sweets and light candles to celebrate victory of our good over our evil. She drew lanterns for us and we got to decorate them with sequins and crayons, markers and colored pencils. She also made a very sweet rice pudding.

Thank you for helping if you came to the campus beautification on Saturday, the campus looks amazing. On Friday when we got back from the Pumpkin patch all the dead "monsters" were gone and then on Saturday they planted all these great flowers outside our classroom. We are having fun taking care of them. My stepson is going to make a planter box for us and we are going to grow our own vegetables. We can not wait.

We had such a wonderful time at the pumpkin patch yesterday, it was super hot and dusty, but the kids had a great time as soon as they got out of the maze, that was the worst for them. We also went on the tractor ride, ate lunch, played duck duck goose, saw a lot of animals and picked out our own pumpkin. It was a great trip. I will send out all the pictures on Monday.

One of the local temples donated 12 Mac Daddy pumpkins to our school, so after snack this morning we went on a pumpkin hunt to see how many we could find. We found them all! These pumpkins will become some of our math and science activities over the next couple of weeks. Check them out next time you are on campus.

Today I was teaching the class about overlapping when drawing. They totally got it. We drew these great pumpkins that were overlapping. After we traced over the pencils drawings with sharpies we colored in the pumpkins very hard with our

pumpkin colored crayons. Then we added some grass. After that the fun really began we crumpled and crumpled and uncrumpled then crumpled our paper some more. After we flattened out our pictures for the last time we lightly in one long stroke painted our pumpkin patch. They did a great job, come check them out sometime.

Yesterday was teachers choice so all the elementary classes met in our classroom and we tied our white t-shirts with rubber bands to make our pumpkin t-shirts. All of the classes are very excited to see how they turn out. After all the shirts were tied up we all sat and watched Scooby Doo and ate popcorn. It was a great, fun afternoon.

I love this time of year all the beautiful colors, the crisp air and the excitement of the count down until the Fall Festival and our trip ti the pumpkin patch. Rainy day excitment

This morning I woke up very excited to hear the sound of thunder, I love stormy days (must be from growing up on the east coast). We had to come in early from P.E. today, because the thunder started up again, but we did get to finish inside our classroom. We went outside later to eat snack and it began to rain. Everyone was hoping we would have lots of puddles to jump in. While they were waiting for the puddles they tried to catch the rain in their mouths. How much fun it is to lean your head back and let the rain drops hit your face. I love these moment with our class!

My Rosarito bike race

Thank you to all of you who were thinking about me this weekend before I went on my 50 mile bike ride from Rosarito to Ensanada. I didn't get to ride but 100 yards because my girlfriends husband crashed, fell off his bike and broke his collar bone, and had to be rushed back to the states to the hospital. I will try it again next year, the 6,000 people down there really energized me. (yes, I did put on my helmet after the picture.)

Yesterday for science we made our own applesauce, it came out really good. Most of the kids liked it but a few didn't, I think it is a texture thing. We discussed how apples are hard and crunchy, round and sweet. Then we talked about how we could change the apple I got great comments

Did you know one of the most prominent indicators of a successful reader is the amount of time spent actually reading?

Student A reads 20 minutes 5 nights of every week.

Student B reads only 4 minutes a night or not at all!

Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week

Student A reads 100 minutes a week. Student B reads 20 minutes a week.

Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.

Student A reads 400 minutes a month. Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Today we got to have music class with Mr. Matthews. Gabby got to get up and play guitar and sing the "ABC song" . All the kids were super happy for her and clapped and cheered for her. They all love music!

We went our first visit to the bunny cages and sat very quietly, yes sat quietly and waited for a bunny to come eat our carrots. Ketan got to feed blackie. What a time we had.

Today we began our science unit on our body, beginning with our bones. I grabbed the life size skeleton from the middle school science teacher. The kids thought it was so much fun to have a visitor in our class all day. We also created our own skeleton to bring home today.

2nd week of school

We survived our first week of Pre-k and are settling into a routine very nicely. We did a little with with a friend time and started doing centers, the kids enjoyed them. Naturally they all wanted to be at the play dough and didn't want to leave it but they did and are learning to transition very nicely.

This afternoon we got to attend the first all school assembly. We went down to the middle school class and sat very quietly and respectfully to watch and learn about physics.

I love September! Back to school and apples every where, it reminds me of when I was a kids growing up on the east coast and every year my family would go to pick apples together, it is such a found memory from my childhood. We have kept that tradition up here in California, every fall my own family goes to Julian to pick apples, if you get a chance to get up there your children will love it and have their own wonderful memories of climbing a tree to pick apples, then eat it right off the tree.

I am sitting here in the classroom getting ready for Back to School Night on Tuesday and I keep hearing little voices asking when are you putting "our heads" on the wall. So I stopped my planning and copying and printed out off the computer "our heads". I have done this every year I have taught and several kids from last year asked me every day where they were. They are going to be so happy when they come in tomorrow, I have moved them from last year. Now as soon as they walk in the class they will see them.

Back to school picnic

We had our all school back to school picnic on Friday after school and it was a lot of fun. I saw several kids from our class at the park and they looked like they were enjoying themselves. I believe I heard that this was the biggest turn out at the picnic yet.
